What distinguishes our firm from the tax department of a large firm?
Roberts & Holland offers a tax practice as sophisticated and challenging as that of any large firm, but with more variety and breadth. The tax department in a large firm is usually a support function for the corporate department, with the result that the breadth of tax experience is limited to the variety of the corporate practice. So if the firm’s corporate practice is concentrated in M&A or banking for example, then the tax department’s work will be confined to those areas. Many of the practice areas in a large law firm, such as litigation, project finance, and bankruptcy, involve little or no taxes at all, so although the firm may be large, its tax practice may be very limited.

Our Practice
We concentrate our practice on taxation – all areas of taxation – federal, international and state and local. We do tax planning, analyze and structure transactions, handle controversies, and where necessary, litigate tax matters. We have partners who concentrate on corporate, international and real estate taxation, controversy and litigation, executive compensation, employee benefits, state and local taxation, estate and gift tax planning, and tax-exempt organizations. Focusing only on taxation for sophisticated clients keeps us on the leading edge of current developments. Often, our clients seek our advice when they have exhausted their own resources and cannot solve the problem in house. We also are brought in by other lawyers and accountants.

Our clients include major U.S public corporations, many with international activities, as well as publicly traded U.S. and foreign institutions, such as banks, insurance companies, REITs and pension funds. We represent some of the world's largest closely held companies, and financial and real estate investors, developers, and operators. We are often retained as special tax counsel to consult on major transactions involving planning, audits and litigation.

Our approach to client service
Although many firms would suggest that they use a team approach, we believe “our” team approach to client service really delivers the greatest value to our clients. Because our clients come to us for our experience and in-depth capability, they expect and appreciate intensive partner involvement in their matters. Today’s transactions have become so complicated that expertise in a number of tax areas is often required to develop the most effective solution. Because we consider our clients to be clients of the firm and not a particular partner, our partners have no reluctance to add to the client service team other partners and associates who have specialized experience. This ensures that each client gets the benefit of the collective expertise of the firm.

Joining Our Firm
We seek individuals with analytical and creative minds who are committed to a career in taxation. We make a deep investment in training our attorneys and are committed to an extensive program of in-house attorney education in each of our practice areas. At our attorney education sessions, associates, as well as partners, explore and lead discussions that address current technical issues. In addition to direct supervision by partners, our associates work directly with clients early in their careers. At Roberts & Holland you will enjoy a collegial work environment, the absence of bureaucracy, an open-door policy and the friendly, relaxed atmosphere of a small firm.
